Franklin Parrasch Gallery is pleased to present Rachel Friedberg: Encaustics, an exhibition of encaustic paintings and assemblage created by Rachel Friedberg between 1980 and 2000, on view November 2 through December 27, 2026. Friedberg (1929–2021, Brooklyn, NY) was a self-taught artist whose more than six-decade practice encompassed materials ranging from encaustic and assemblage, to collage, drawing, and sculpture. Often diaristic in nature, Friedberg conceived her work as visual poems—layered, symbolic compositions of signs, inscriptions, and personal iconography. Her works explore loss, memory, and identity, drawing frequently on private recollections and family history. From 1973 to 1986, Friedberg served as artist-in-residence and a faculty member at Edward Williams College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, in Teaneck, New Jersey. She also curated exhibitions for the university’s Edward Williams Art Gallery. Friedberg’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the Newark Museum, Newark, NJ; Columbia University and the School of Social Research, New York, NY; the Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, NY; the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ; the Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, MA; and the University of Denver Art Collection, Denver, CO.
