## Jocelyn Hobbie: A Rosy Fingered Dawn

- When: On view through Nov 07
- Run: Oct 08 – Nov 07, 2026

Fredericks & Freiser is pleased to announce A Rosy Fingered Dawn , an exhibition of new paintings by Jocelyn Hobbie. For more than three decades, Hobbie has developed a singular pictorial language in which beauty, eroticism, mortality, and psychological distance define her women. Emerging in 1994, at the tail end of the decade’s major resurgence of figurative painting, her early works often unfolded through dreamlike relationships and Mannerist figures. Over time, that narrative scaffolding has been replaced by a psychological charge absorbed into pose, color, pattern, and surface. Pattern has always been central to how Hobbie constructs an image. Drawing on sources as varied as Ukiyo-e, New Objectivity, decorative textiles, and the architectural use of color, Hobbie renders clothing, flowers, and other background elements with heightened precision. The result is a pictorial world in which everything appears lush, exacting, and preternaturally unspoiled. Pattern organizes the image, compresses space, and frequently acts as a kind of protective membrane around the figure. The longer Hobbie’s women are observed, the more their extraordinary visual specificity seems to resist being known. Abundance does not reveal character so much as shield it.

## Spotlight: Sam Mattax

- When: On view through Nov 07
- Run: Oct 07 – Nov 07, 2026
- Source: https://fredericksfreisergallery.com/exhibitions/spotlight-sam-mattax

Fredericks & Freiser is pleased to introduce Spotlight, a new series of focused presentations drawn from our ongoing conversations with artists. Conceived as something closer to a studio visit than a conventional exhibition, each Spotlight marks a moment when a new body of work has begun to take shape. Rather than waiting for that body of work to be complete, the series brings a concentrated view of the studio into the gallery, offering a snapshot of an artist’s thinking as it develops. While works presented in a Spotlight may later become part of a larger exhibition, they allow the viewer a unique opportunity to engage directly with an artist’s process at a singular moment in time.

## Danielle Roberts: Echo on a Pane

- When: Opens Nov 12, on view through Dec 23
- Run: Nov 12 – Dec 23, 2026
- Source: https://fredericksfreisergallery.com/exhibitions/danielle-roberts3

Danielle Roberts’s figures inhabit the late hours, moving through familiar places designed for the filling of need and the indulgence of want. Roberts approaches these settings with an underlying stillness, as if transience suspends time. In Echo on a Pane, Roberts’s figures are increasingly subordinated to the painting’s larger structures of light, atmosphere, and surface. Graphic contour and deep purple hues remain present, yet the paintings take on a vagabond luminosity that shifts from object to glow.
