- Run: Fri, Nov 6, 7pm
- Source: https://www.participantinc.org/seasons/season-25/gabrielle-civil-br-black-weirdo-school-psychic-defence-club

On November 6, 2026, we will share Black Weirdo School Psychic Defense Club , the first iteration of our long-term collaboration with LA-based writer, performer, and artist, Gabrielle Civil, curated by writer and curator Shameekia Shantel Johnson. This iteration of Civil’s Black Weirdo School (2022-present) continues the artist’s way of activating performance to combat the psychological effects of racialized violence, particularly in relation to art, education, and art education. Part exorcism, part survival preparedness, and part pop up dance party, this solo performance is precursor to a major survey exhibition being organized for Spring 2027.

Deny, Defend, Depose is a short film made entirely of tweets collected since the morning of December 04, 2024, when a masked person in New York City assassinated United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson with a veterinary euthanasia pistol and a silencer, then fled on a Citibike. The shooting was captured on surveillance camera and immediately went viral. Twitter (now “X”) erupted in uncanny unison: the collective response was joy. Celebratory snark and rage-fueled one-liners spat out deadly statistics and stories of failed care in the US healthcare system. The feed was flooded with giddy and outrageous hate-bonding and love for a new hero: Luigi Mangione.
