- When: On view through Nov 29
- Run: Sep 09 – Nov 29, 2026

Printed Matter is pleased to present New Openings Against Old Surfaces: On Gordon Matta-Clark’s Walls Paper , the first exhibition focused specifically on the publishing output of pioneering artist Gordon Matta-Clark, with a particular focus on his project Walls Paper . The show offers an in-depth consideration of the 1973 publication, situating the work as a key experiment within the artist’s diverse and ambitious practice, and with the artists’ book medium at large. The exhibition is organized with the participation of the Estate of Gordon Matta-Clark, with materials drawn from its archives, and the Gordon Matta-Clark collection at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal. On occasion of the exhibition, Printed Matter will realize two newly-created commissions from contemporary artists in dialogue with the legacy of Matta-Clark.

Printed Matter presents a new window installation as part of Homes for People, Not for Profit , a collaboration between Art Against Displacement (AAD) and Alex Strada that reactivates Homeless At Home , a 1985–86 project in which dozens of artists and architects, at the behest of Storefront for Art and Architecture, designed and deployed stencils that “[spoke] directly to the public about the necessity of human dignity and home for everyone.” 1 In November 1985, Printed Matter co-founder Lucy Lippard curated a window installation of these stencils for its original storefront on Lispenard Street. Precisely 41 years later, AAD and Strada, in collaboration with FEC Tenants Against Demolition, will paint a selection of original and contemporary stencils on Printed Matter’s window, in recognition of that history — while also responding to the store’s proximity to NYCHA’s Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses, which currently face demolition under a $1.2 billion plan conceived in partnership with private developers.

Armando Alleyne is a painter, poet and photographer who grew up on the Lower East Side of New York City. Experiences of homophobia early in his life led Alleyne to find the organization Gay Youth, a group of people like him who offered safety and acceptance. With camera in hand, Alleyne documented his participation in gay liberation marches as a twenty-year-old Gay Youth member. These photographs, from June 1979 and 1980, recently surfaced from his “magic file cabinet,” offering both a previously unseen aspect of Alleyne’s practice and a history of politicized LGBTQ organizations, leaders, and community in New York City just prior to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Alleyne has noted that these portraits, streets scenes, and landscapes do not depict pride parades, nor what we might associate with them today, but something more akin to a rally—charged, hopeful, and celebratory.
