## Senri Oe Trio

- Venue: Birdland Theater
- Run: Oct 30 - Oct 31, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/senri-oe-trio/

Halloween night at Birdland. Expect the unexpected. On the most magical night of the year, something extraordinary is about to happen at New York City’s legendary Birdland Theater. The music will cast its own spell — and once it does, you won’t want to break free. Senri Oe Trio takes the stage for two extraordinary nights — four sets of music that defy category, blur boundaries, and just might bewitch you. Senri Oe is one of the most remarkable reinventions in contemporary music. Beginning classical piano at age three and discovering jazz at fifteen, he first rose to extraordinary heights in Japan: a multi-platinum recording artist, Japanese Grammy winner, actor, television anchor, and author — a cultural icon whose name defined an era. At forty-seven, at the peak of his fame, Senri made a bold and deeply personal choice. He walked away from stardom, moved to New York City with his beloved dachshund, Peace, and enrolled in The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Under the mentorship of masters including Junior Mance and Aaron Goldberg, he reinvented himself from scratch. It was not a retreat. It was a return to his first love. Since his 2012 jazz debut, Boys Mature Slow, Senri has built a powerful international presence — performing at the Atlanta and Detroit Jazz Festivals, headlining SummerFest for two consecutive years, and charting at #24 on JazzWeek in 2023 with his album Class of ’88. These Birdland performances celebrate the worldwide release of his latest album, HOMEWORK (Global release: September 4, 2026) — conceived in his Brooklyn living room and recorded at The Bunker Studio with bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Ross Pederson, with mixing by Aaron Nevezie. HOMEWORK fuses digital and acoustic worlds into a soundtrack without visuals: brilliant, edgy, and profoundly human. Don’t miss your chance to be part of something unforgettable. This Halloween, let the music haunt you. Senri Oe — piano & all compositions Matt Clohesy — bass Ross Pederson — drums

## Pasquale Grasso Trio

- Venue: Birdland Jazz Club
- Run: Oct 31, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/pasquale-grasso-trio-11/

It was the kind of endorsement most rising guitarists can only dream of, and then some. In his interview for Vintage Guitar magazine’s February 2016 cover story, Pat Metheny was asked to name some younger musicians who’d impressed him. “The best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life is floating around now, Pasquale Grasso,” said the jazz-guitar icon and NEA Jazz Master. “This guy is doing something so amazingly musical and so difficult. “Mostly what I hear now are guitar players who sound a little bit like me mixed with a little bit of [John Scofield] and a little bit of [Bill Frisell],” he continued. “What’s interesting about Pasquale is that he doesn’t sound anything like that at all. In a way, it is a little bit of a throwback, because his model—which is an incredible model to have—is Bud Powell. He has somehow captured the essence of that language from piano onto guitar in a way that almost nobody has ever addressed. He’s the most significant new guy I’ve heard in many, many years.” As he’s done with many rising jazz stars, Metheny later invited Grasso over to his New York pad to jam and share some wisdom. He’s since become a generous presence in Grasso’s life, and his assessment of Grasso’s playing is—no surprise—spot-on. Born in Italy and now based in New York City, the 30-year- old guitarist has developed an astounding technique and concept informed not by jazz guitarists so much as by bebop pioneers like Powell, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and the classical-guitar tradition. His new digital-only EP series, available beginning in June from Sony Masterworks, showcases Grasso in the solo-guitar format, where his intensive studies of both midcentury jazz and classical meld into a signature mastery that is, remarkably, at once unprecedented and evocative.

## Cyrille Aimée

- Venue: Birdland Jazz Club
- Run: Nov 3 - Nov 7, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/cyrille-aimee/

Cyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity, soundtracked by the Afro-Caribbean sounds of her mother's native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bendroom window at night to mingle with the players, igniting a passion for jazz. Moving to New York City, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York City's City Centre, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim's songs which received praise from Sondheim himself, and her version of 'Marry Me a Little' was nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY award. At the height of her New York success, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman, and together they created her latest album, A Fleur de Peau , to be released on a new label, the London-based imprit Whirlwind Records. Combining the depth and sophistication of jazz, the immediacy of pop, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean, it's more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

Jason Marshall – Musician | Educator | Thought Leader "I have been entrusted with an aptitude for music so that I can be about the work of wellness in my community and in my environment. That work includes restoring our subconscious and super-subconscious memory, reacquainting with our original customs and languages; restoring and developing our intrinsic culture. I gather the pieces of our fractured history together in the vibrations of our ancestors that we might fashion an accurate map of the way forward. Together." Jason Marshall is a premiere voice on the baritone saxophone, rooted in the bebop tradition yet deeply expansive in his musical curiosity. Based in New York City since 2003, he has built a wide-reaching career as a performer, composer, arranger, educator, and cultural voice. His work honors the joy, complexity, and legacy of Black American Music, spanning styles and generations with integrity and soul. Jason holds a Master of Music in Jazz Performance from Queens College's Aaron Copland School of Music and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Saxophone from The New School’s School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. Over the past two decades, he has brought his artistry to stages around the world, performing and recording with his own ensemble as well as with artists including Roy Hargrove, Aretha Franklin, Deedee Bridgewater, Chaka Khan, Abdullah Ibrahim, Kurt Elling, The Roots, The Temptations, Mingus Big Band, Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Birdland Big Band, Birdland Latin Jazz Orchestra, and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. His discography as a leader includes Overt Negritude (2006), Sign the Book (2010), Joy Unspeakable (2020), and New Beginnings (2022, Cellar Live). He currently teaches at Montclair State University and The New School, and leads ensembles and instrumental instruction with Jazz House Kids (Montclair) and Jazz for Teens. His private studio has nurtured young musicians for over a decade, while his work with Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections & Social Impact Program brings music education to system-involved and incarcerated individuals across the country. At Columbia University Business School, he gives lectures on how jazz and African American culture can positively influence corporate cultures around the world. Jason’s writing extends his role as a cultural historian and thinker. His published essays—on John Coltrane, Hampton Hawes, Lee Morgan, and Stanley Turrentine—honor Black music luminaries and their continued resonance. These reflections are housed at Ivy Style , where his contributions form a bridge between music, culture, and identity.

## JUNKO YAGAMI: Pop Meets Jazz on Route 66

- Venue: Birdland Theater
- Run: Nov 15, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/junko-yagami-pop-meets-jazz-on-route-66/

What happens when Japan’s City Pop meets New York jazz? Nobody knows. That’s exactly the point. This isn’t a tribute show. This isn’t nostalgia. This is a live experiment — four world-class musicians walking into Birdland Theater with decades of Japanese pop and American jazz in their bones, and no predetermined destination. The songs will be familiar. What happens to them won’t be. Junko Yagami’s catalog has already proven it can travel. Songs like “Bay City,” crafted in the late 1970s with American grooves and independent female spirit baked into every bar, have accumulated billions of streams worldwide — not through marketing, but through pure musical gravity. Listeners in Brazil, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, and across the United States discovered them on their own and couldn’t stop playing them. The City Pop phenomenon is real, it is massive, and Yagami is at its center. Ross Pederson — bandmaster and drummer for this engagement — is one of New York’s most electrifying percussionists: a founding member of Snarky Puppy, a collaborator of Fred Hersch, Patricia Barber, Donny McCaslin, and Patti Austin, and a player whose 2023 debut album, *Identity*, drew raves from Modern Drummer, DownBeat, and JazzTimes. His drumming is explosive, nuanced, and relentlessly alive. What he does with a groove is not decoration — it is transformation. The program moves through beloved American standards tied to the mythology of Route 66 alongside Yagami’s most celebrated Japanese compositions, all newly arranged and reimagined for this night. Route 66 is the organizing metaphor: a road that carried American music — blues, jazz, folk, soul — westward across a continent, absorbing everything in its path and transforming it into something new. WHO IS JUNKO YAGAMI? The short answer: Japan’s most globally significant female vocalist of the past half century. The longer answer begins in Nagoya, with a teenager who barely listened to Japanese music — who transcribed incomprehensible English lyrics into phonetic characters just to sing along with Barbra Streisand and The Carpenters, who fell in love with the image of Western women who stood strong and never apologized for it. That sensibility never left her music. A massive commercial breakthrough came early. A decade of industry pressure followed. Then came liberation — a move to Los Angeles, a long pause, a return to Japan galvanized by the 2011 earthquake and volunteer work in the disaster zones of Tohoku. “Things I couldn’t do for myself, I could do for others.” She rebuilt her career entirely on her own terms: self-produced, self-managed, answering to no one but her audience. In 2022 she became the first Japanese artist inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame in the United States — not through lobbying, but because Hall judges found her on YouTube and heard what she had always been. Her voice carries all of it: the discipline of a professional who survived the industry, the freedom of an artist who escaped it, and the depth of someone who has spent fifty years singing because she genuinely cannot do otherwise.

Geoffrey Keezer has been a major figure in NYC's jazz piano scene since 1989, when he became the last pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer has toured and recorded with Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Barbara Hendricks, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Sting, Joe Locke and Christian McBride. Time Magazine wrote, “Geoffrey has more than enough virtuosity and sheer musical wit and intelligence to weave all of his apparently disparate strands of influence into an original and compelling whole”, and pop icon Sting said “In the universe of piano players that I have been exposed to over the years, Geoffrey has proved himself to be not only a superb technician and improviser, but also above and beyond this, a composer and conceptualist who can maintain the overall line and the DNA of the song in everything he plays. A musician’s musician.”

## Brandee Younger

- Venue: Birdland Theater
- Run: Dec 4 - Dec 5, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/brandee-younger/

Among the most celebrated jazz artists to emerge in the 21st century, Brandee Younger is a harpist, composer and bandleader whose music connects spiritual jazz and classical training to the rhythmic soulfulness of R&B and hip-hop. She grew up on Long Island, where she sang gospel, studied the harp classically and became enamored of both hip-hop and the vintage soul that rap producers sampled. When Younger was a teenager, her father introduced her to Alice Coltrane’s music — a transformative moment that all but defined her life’s journey. Her first LP for the storied Impulse! Records label — a.k.a. The House That Trane Built — was 2021’s Somewhere Different . A track from that album, “Beautiful Is Black,” earned Younger a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category, making her the first Black female solo artist to achieve this. Two years later, on Brand New Life , Younger revitalized newly discovered Ashby compositions, and that LP won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album. Gadabout Season , released in 2025, is a more reflective and personal work focusing on Younger’s inimitable original music. In addition to her non-stop performance schedule, Younger is a dedicated educator, teaching on the faculties of New York University and the New School.

- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/vanessa-racci-comfort-joy-album-release/

Get ready to be enveloped by Comfort & Joy at Vanessa Racci's third album release show at Birdland Jazz. Known originally as the "Jazzy Italian", this album is Vanessa's foray into something different. Comfort & Joy is a neo-classic Holiday Jazz album reviving the warm, seasonal sounds of Ella, Nat and Sinatra with a modern Jazz twist. It's co-produced by 2x Grammy Winner, Nicole Zuraitis, and arranged by NY Pops and Broadway arranger/pianist, Ron Drotos with an amazing team of musicians: Marcus McLaurine on bass, Dan Pugach on drums, Geoff Burke on sax, Benny Benack on trumpet / duet vocals and Sean Harkness on guitar. BIO: Vanessa Racci is a touring and recording jazz vocalist who is equally comfortable singing straight-ahead jazz as well as music that reflects her Italian heritage. Descended from Southern Italian immigrants, she grew up living with her Barese grandfather, who played Jazz and Italian classics throughout the house. This inspired her first, self-released album, Italiana Fresca , in 2017, produced by David Finck and arranged by Yaron Gershovsky of Manhattan Transfer. After debuting her music to a sold out crowd at Birdland Jazz Club and touring it around the country, Vanessa was inspired to record her second album after visiting the Jazz and Italian American museums of New Orleans. Her sophomore album, Jazzy Italian (Zoho Jazz Label, 2022) , celebrates Italian Americans who made their mark on jazz from Louis Prima to Chick Corea. Produced and arranged by Grammy winner, Steven Feifke, Jazzy Italian made the top 10 Traditional jazz albums of 2022 on the RMR jazz chart and is programmed on Siriusly Sinatra and NPR in addition to 150+ radio stations. Vanessa also produces and performs in several other jazz history shows including Hot Speakeasy Nights (The story of Prohibition in NYC and the music that defined it), An Ode to Gershwin and a Tribute to Harry Warren. Vanessa performs at over 50 venues and festivals across the country annually from New York to New Orleans to San Francisco with a social media following of 16K+. Notable appearances include ABC7NY, Birdland, Gracie Mansion, The Paramount, White Plains Jazz Festival and the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center. When she isn't performing, she teaches voice at her home studio and at Music in Chappaqua. Vanessa studied Jazz voice at SUNY Purchase with Alexis Cole and privately with Jackie Presti and is currently getting her Masters in Jazz at SUNY Purchase ('27 Grad). ## Laura Anglade

- Venue: Birdland Theater
- Run: Dec 6, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/laura-anglade/

New York-based vocalist Laura Anglade has long been rooted in the Great American Songbook, but her new single; “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story expands that language into something more theatrical, textured, and emotionally open. Anglade is entering what she describes as “a new era of my artistry,” one shaped by the feeling of being “on the brink of something I can’t quite name yet.” Anglade is pushing further into her range as a performer. “I find myself taking more risks,” she says. “I am more experimental and can stretch more, testing the limits.” That shift is palpable in this latest singles. Musical theater sits at the heart of the project. “I grew up with it,” Anglade says. “I was a theater kid. I never got the lead role. This feels like getting to step into those roles now.” Rather than approaching these songs as fixed standards, she inhabits them as characters, scenes, and emotional landscapes. Something’s Coming arrives after a milestone year for Anglade, whose 2025 album Get Out of Town won Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the 2026 JUNO Awards. She also reached broader audiences with performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #LateShowMeMusic and The Kelly Clarkson Show . Rather than treating that momentum as a finish line, this release opens the door to a broader, more theatrical chapter of her work.

## Marilyn Maye

- Venue: Birdland Theater
- Run: Dec 30, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/tm-event/marilyn-maye/

Marilyn Maye is a highly praised singer, actress, director, arranger, educator, a Grammy nominated recording artist and a musical treasure. Her entire life has been committed to the art of song and performance. The award-winning Ms. Maye appeared 76 times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson - the record for a singer. His usual accolade for her came after one of her show-stopping appearances on The Tonight Show when he turned to his audience of millions, Carson said, “And that, young singers, is the way it's done.” She was “discovered” by Steve Allen who presented her various times to his national television audience. That led her to an RCA recording contract, seven albums and 34 singles. Her recent CBS Sunday Morning feature with Mo Rocca was an outstanding tribute to her career and talent. She was currently interviewed and sang on “Harry” (Harry Connick Jr.) NBC TV. Her place in American music history was assured when the Arts Council of the Smithsonian Institution selected one of her recordings, “Too Late Now” for the Smithsonian produced album of the 110 Best American Compositions of the Twentieth Century. Ms. Maye performs many symphony and big-band concerts throughout the United States. In New York her future appearances will be Feinstein's 54 Below for eight nights, New Year's eve plus January 1 thru 5 at Birdland Theater, February 2020, six shows at Jazz at Lincoln Center and she'll celebrate her birthday for eight nights in April at Feinstein's 54 Below. In the Wall Street Journal last year, Will Friedwald wrote, “When going to hear Marilyn Maye, you'll find on one side of the room are the Broadway and cabaret people, who tend to like their singing big and theatrical, with a lot of drama and stage presence. On the other side is the jazz crowd, who want everything hip and cool and understated, and will split the scene if anything doesn't swing. Ms. Maye is the only pop-song diva working today who can satisfy both crowds at once”.
