ABOUT THE BOOK A Poets & Writers First Fiction 2026 Debut Selection In the late 1970s, Ziad Idilbi a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon, marries Salma, a Lebanese refugee escaping the war in Beirut. Resolving to start over for the very last time, the couple opens a corner store in Toledo, Ohio. Over the decades, whether it’s bigotry (pre- and post-9/11), financial ruin, or terminal illness, the Idilbis find themselves on life’s outskirts, always seemingly one day away from catastrophe. The linked stories in Carryout follow Walid Idilbi, the youngest child of Ziad and Salma, as he navigates the heartbreaks of youth, the many colorful characters from Toledo’s Arab community, and growing up into a writer. Unsure at times whether to run toward each other or away from each other, the characters in Dudar’s exquisite debut suffer the absurdities and indignities of life in America with wry obstinance and striking wisdom. ## Book Launch | Squatters by Saba Brelvi

- Run: November 10, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://yuandmebooks.com/products/book-launch-squatters-by-saba-brelvi

Pre-purchase your copy of the featured title to guarantee your signed copy! Can't make it? ABOUT THE BOOK Two families collide in Saba Brelvi’s THE SQUATTERS, a gripping debut that offers a piercing exploration of female friendship, particularly the kinds of bonds forged through proximity, motherhood, and social performance. Emotionally incisive, and morally unflinching, THE SQUATTERS explores the limits of compassion, the cost of solidarity, and interrogates the hidden boundaries of empathy within even the most intimate communities, revealing how quickly generosity can collapse when stability, property, and belonging feel under threat. Surrey is a quiet, affluent area just outside of London, replete with tree-lined streets, excellent schools, and carefully maintained lives. But among its polished homes and close-knit social circles, Dalia Waheed has never fully felt that she belongs. Though she and her husband embody the promise of second-generation immigrant success, Dalia cannot shake the sense that she has become trapped inside a life that is comfortable, stable—and profoundly disconnected from the person she once imagined herself to be. When Dalia begins volunteering at a local nonprofit serving refugees and asylum seekers, she meets Hajira and Yusuf, a young couple who have fled their home country in search of safety in the U.K. Hajira is heavily pregnant, frightened, and living in grim government housing while awaiting the outcome of her asylum claim. Drawn to her in ways she struggles to explain, Dalia cannot ignore Hajira’s plea for help. Helping another mother secure a safer place to live feels less like charity than obligation. But what starts as a simple act of compassion quickly spirals into something far more dangerous. As Dalia becomes increasingly entangled in Hajira and Yusuf’s lives, the boundaries between empathy and responsibility begin to collapse. Her well-intentioned efforts place mounting strain on her marriage, her friendships, and her standing within the very community she has spent years trying to enter. And as the situation escalates into public conflict, Dalia is forced to confront a question that becomes impossible to outrun: does motherhood make us more radical—or more protective of the lives we have built? Saba Brelvi writes with remarkable clarity and restraint about the tension between political ideals and personal comfort, between safety and justice, between private domesticity and collective responsibility. There are no easy heroes in THE SQUATTERS, only people with varying degrees of courage, fear, and self-interest attempting to live ethically in an unequal world. A novel of extraordinary emotional intelligence and urgency, THE SQUATTERS asks what we owe to one another, what motherhood demands of us, and how much we are truly willing to risk for the lives of others. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Saba Brelvi is a Muslim American writer from California. She holds a BA from Brown University and an MPH from Johns Hopkins University and has spent more than two decades working in the nonprofit sector. She currently resides in Abu Dhabi with her family. The Squatters is her debut novel.

## Book Launch | Tiger's Mouth by Lucy Tan

- Run: November 17, 2026
- Tickets and info: https://yuandmebooks.com/products/book-launch-tigers-mouth-by-lucy-tan

Pre-purchase your copy of the featured title to guarantee your signed copy! ABOUT THE BOOK When two young men meet during a tech internship, it sparks an intense friendship—and even more intense competition—in this sweeping novel of privilege, identity, and ambition from the acclaimed author of What We Were Promised . Jack Chen, the oldest son of caterers from Queens, is an expert at studying the rich from afar. When he finagles his way into a prestigious internship at tech giant K.O. Systems, he’s prepared to fake everything: his credentials, his confidence, even his past. What he isn’t prepared for is his officemate, Jack Owens, the depressed son of the company’s billionaire founder, who’s only there for a summer reprieve from his father’s scrutiny at the family vacation house. Their connection is immediate, built on mutual admiration. Chen sees in Owens the advantages he’s been denied; Owens sees in Chen someone free of the pain he’s been taught to hide. Owens, Chen, and Chen’s girlfriend quickly become close friends, but by summer's end the three can no longer outrun the lies they’ve told themselves and each other. As pressures build throughout the next few years, the two Jacks circle each other like opponents in their favorite board game, Go, each chasing the life the other was born into, from career to family to lovers. But the path to success and matters of the heart can test even the closest of friendships—and not all of them survive. Nostalgic, heart-wrenching, and propulsive, Tiger’s Mouth is a nuanced portrait of complex friendship, family dynamics, and love in its most unexpected forms. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lucy Tan is the author of What We Were Promised , which was a Barnes and Noble Discover Pick, longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, and named a best book of the year by The Washington Post .
