Oliver Bak’s vibrant painterly topographies stem from a deep engagement with historical painting traditions, their ideas and visual languages reimagined within a contemporary context. His mottled brushwork builds up dense, overlapping layers to form a pictorial space in which fragments gradually emerge through successive narrative veils, allowing multiple strands of meaning to take shape. Sprüth Magers is delighted to present Bak’s first solo exhibition at the New York gallery, marking the Danish artist’s debut in the United States. In his latest body of work, spectral figures drift into slumber among floral forms. Sleep appears here in two registers: the outward stillness of bodies at rest and the inner dreamscape into which consciousness wanders and clouds over. As the artist paints, ephemeral images are sublimated through a palimpsestic process to materialize something unconscious. Bak’s process therefore converges with its subject: sleep as a fragile threshold between life and death, giving way to oneiric states suspended between earthbound natural forms and the cosmic, celestial quality that suffuses his paintings.
