Electra Untitled is a dance theatre adaptation of Sophocles’ Electra in dialogue with J. P. Sartre’s The Flies, through the female and queer gaze. The performance is an international, travelling excavation of personal autobiographies, as well as a reconstruction of the collective and archetypal body of Electra as a bearer of memory, trauma and resistance. It is developed through a laboratory process with local artists around the world, attempting to give equal weight to both the creative process and the artistic outcome in a re-approach to ancient Greek tragedy, questioning its relevance for the theatre of today. The performance blends Theodoros Terzopoulos’ Physical Theatre Method, Puppetry and Live Cinema. A multicultural ensemble of dancers/puppeteers uses their autobiographical material around gender-based violence (GBV) to rewrite the myth of Electra and illuminate how patriarchy affects relationships between female identities and queer people. Electra becomes a contemporary anti-heroine, trapped within a violence that runs through generations of patriarchal oppression. The performers transform the stage in order to retell the ancient myth and address the collective body of Electra, deeply investigating a feminist reconsideration of the character and of the tragedy as a whole. Electra Untitled adds a twist to an old narrative and highlights the role of women who bring about change in times of hostility and disintegration. Sophocles’ tragedy Electra functions as a conceptual framework and is used as a metaphor alongside autobiographical testimonies from the performers and workshop participants in order to tell stories of intergenerational violence.
