1 date listedOne artist. New perspectives. Endless horizons. A conversation series exploring how solo performance reaches across cultures, disciplines, and audiences—opening new horizons for the art of being solo. Some theater artists wait for the canon to make room for them. Cheeyang Ng wrote a new myth instead. Their solo ritual musical Legendary sold out its run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer, earned a stack of five-star reviews, and won three awards: Outstanding Individual Performance at the Asian Art Awards, the IC Awards’ Personal Achievement Award, and a Gold Edinburgh Festival Fringe Theatre Award. The Singapore-born artist-producer joins 1 Minute Critic founder and editorial director Matthew Wexler for an intimate conversation about new forms of theatermaking, pushing back on Western ideas of what theater “should” be, and breaking through as a queer Asian multi-hyphenate talent. The afternoon includes a screening of the music video for “In the Beginning,” the opening number from Legendary, plus audience Q&A. It’s a rare chance to hear from one of solo performance’s most exciting voices at a festival built for the form.
